4 kW & 5 kW Solar System Price in India 2026 (With Subsidy)
Full 2026 cost of 4 kW and 5 kW rooftop solar in India, price before and after PM Surya Ghar subsidy, generation, monthly savings and payback for larger homes.
Short answer: In India in 2026, a 4 kW system costs about ₹2.3–₹2.8 lakh and a 5 kW system about ₹2.8–₹3.4 lakh before subsidy. Both qualify for the maximum PM Surya Ghar subsidy of ₹78,000 (the cap applies from 3 kW up), so net costs are roughly ₹1.5–₹2.0 lakh (4 kW) and ₹2.0–₹2.6 lakh (5 kW), ideal for larger homes running multiple ACs.
4 kW & 5 kW solar price (2026)
| System | Before subsidy | Subsidy | Net cost | Daily units | Monthly saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 kW | ₹2.3–2.8 lakh | ₹78,000 | ₹1.5–2.0 lakh | ~16 | ₹3,300–4,500 |
| 5 kW | ₹2.8–3.4 lakh | ₹78,000 | ₹2.0–2.6 lakh | ~20 | ₹4,200–5,600 |

Who should choose 4 kW or 5 kW?
- 4 kW: large home with one or two ACs, monthly bill ₹4,000–5,000. Needs ~250–300 sq ft of shade-free roof.
- 5 kW: big home with multiple ACs or an EV to charge, bill ₹5,000–7,000+. Needs ~320–360 sq ft.
If your bill is below ₹3,500/month, 3 kW is usually the sweet spot and earns the same ₹78,000 subsidy at lower cost.
Important: the subsidy caps at ₹78,000
The PM Surya Ghar residential subsidy does not increase beyond 3 kW. So a 4 kW and a 5 kW system get the same ₹78,000. Size to your actual consumption, see how to claim the subsidy.
Savings over 25 years
A 5 kW system generating ~600 units/month can save a large home ₹50,000–₹67,000 a year, over ₹12–15 lakh across the 25-year panel life, against a one-time net cost near ₹2.3 lakh.
Common mistakes
- Oversizing beyond your load, you pay for capacity you can’t use (unless you have net metering to bank surplus + future EV/AC plans).
- Cheap inverter on a big system, a 5 kW system needs a robust inverter; this is where bad quotes cut corners.
- Ignoring roof shade, larger arrays are more likely to have partial shading; plan for it.
- Skipping net metering, essential to monetise surplus from a big system.
